Music videos give artists a more complete identity that a sound recording can’t. Putting a face to the music brings fans closer and creates a strong bond between them and the artist. It also gives artists the opportunity to fully complete their persona. Music videos can also give fans a taste of the live shows.

(The 1975 - Robbers)

The music video does not stand alone but it co-promotes everything else surrounding the band. Music videos can help attract fans to shows, promote music releases, sell merchandise, or bring awareness to causes or issues that the artist cares about.

their style of music is indie rock/pop rock

in this music video, the lead singer Matt Healy brands himself as being a 'junkie' as he is shown to be taking hard drugs like cocaine...

the rock genre is based around rebels and rule breakers. this is because in the 50s, music was very bland and 'samey'. rock and roll was invented for young teens/young adults to have a good time and to dance to music instead of listening to classical/bland music.

rock and roll then progressed into punk/grunge...

Nirvana was an American rock band that was formed by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselicin Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting being Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990. Despite releasing only three full-length studio albums in their seven-year career, Nirvana has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and important rock bands of the modern era.

Nirvana follow the same ethics of rock musicians/audiences due to their preference of clothing and lifestyle.

This was an interview video at the Reading Music festival of 1991. These type of interviews are broadcasted on television channels such as MTV and it gives the audience an insight as to what the artists are like talking to the camera and how they are/how they've developed/grown. So this acts almost as a marketing strategy as they usually promote a new album or single they are releasing. In this video the band members of Nirvana talk about how they started the band, but they dont go into much detail which shows the attitude of themselves... and as rock musicians this backs up the stereotypes placed upon them. Dave Grohl (left) is the drummer of the band and he talks about about he never tried at school and just 'smoked pot' in his bedroom...  they are also publicly smoking in this interview as this is apart of their brand image.

Rock n Roll background

Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n' roll) is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s,[ primarily from a combination of predominantly African-American genres such as blues, boogie woogie, jump blues, jazz, and gospel music, together with Western swing and country music.Though elements of rock and roll can be heard in blues records from the 1920s and in country records of the 1930s, the genre did not acquire its name until the 1950s.
The term "rock and roll" now has at least two different meanings, both in common usage: referring to the first wave of music that originated in the US in the 1950s and would later develop into the more encompassing international style known as "rock music", and as a term simply synonymous with the rock music and culture in the broad sense. For the purpose of differentiation, this article deals with the first definition.

Chuck Berry, was a rock n roll artist who wrote hits such as 'Johnny be Goode' and 'Never can tell' . The rock genre has always been a genre for the youths. It was played in dancehalls instead of the usual slow dancing music and thought to be very wrong. Teens were the main audience for rock and roll. Also, back in 50s America, racism was a huge issue due to slavery. Black musicians such as Chuck Berry were very inspirational to others for overcoming the racist views and still performed.

The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. The Rolling Stones are an iconic image in the music world. They are a household name across the world. The way that they have branded themselves in the music industry is the key to this bands success. They were seen as a sex icon just as much as rockstars.

During the same period another rock band, 'The Beatles' were extremely popular and have also become a household name. Unlike the rolling stones, the beattle were seen as 'good boys' and would hold then girls hand instead of being obnoxiously in the girls space.

The rolling stones released an album with a lips and tongue logo on the front of the cover. It was a very basic logo but it branded the band for what they wanted to be. A sex icon and appealing to females. The logo is extremely famous and is instantly recognisable as the rolling stones. Therefore this is a very good example of a marketing campaign.
Sticky Fingers was the first to feature the logo of Rolling Stones Records. This eventually became the band’s logo consisting of a pair of generous lips with a prominent tongue.

Hard rock is a loosely defined subgenre of rock music that began in the mid-1960s, with the garage, psychedelic and blues rock movements. It is typified by a heavy use of aggressive vocals, distorted electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, and often accompanied with pianos and keyboards.
Hard rock developed into a major form of popular music in the 1970s, with bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, AC/DC and Van Halen. During the 1980s, some hard rock bands moved away from their hard rock roots and more towards pop rock, while others began to return to a hard rock sound. Established bands made a comeback in the mid-1980s and it reached a commercial peak in the 1980s, with glam metal bands like Bon Jovi and Def Leppard and the rawer sounds of Guns N' Roses, which followed up with great success in the later part of that decade. Hard rock began losing popularity with the commercial success of grunge and later Britpop in the 1990s.

Grunge (sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound) is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged during the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in Seattle. The early grunge movement revolved around Seattle's independent record label Sub Pop, but by the early 1990s its popularity had spread, with grunge acts in California and other parts of the U.S. building strong followings and signing major record deals.

Nirvana

What makes certain individuals turn to a lifestyle of grunge? If one puts his mind to it it's not that hard to figure out. It comes down to a simple common denominator: acceptance. Let's explore now the world of grunge. But more importantly, why people (particularly the young) chose this avenue to travel in our growing subculture.
Teenagers today are bombarded by rock music and visual images stemming from the covers of magazines (Rolling Stone) and from the greatest medium of all- TV. MTV, that is. Young people can affiliate with the bitter emotions of loneliness and abandonment by looking up to such individuals as Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and Curt Cobain of Nirvana who radiate the true meaning of grunge. And what is the true meaning of grunge? Really it's just a natural style which has been around for the longest of times without anyone noticing it. It originated out of peoples cravings to be comfortable and relaxed. But more fitting today is this idea of being rebellious and going up against authority. Actually this is nothing new, since the urge of going against authority has been going on for hundreds of years. Only now, this rebellious behaviour has been given a clear face and name. And that is grunge.
Whether or not this partaking in the grunge lifestyle can lead to violence is undetermined. Mostly, as stated above, the common teenager is not really interested in expressing his inner-self in a destructive way, but in a more fashionable way through the clothing, language, and attitude of grunge.

Grunge is very similar to the origins of rock and roll and the true meaning of rock. To stand out from the crowd and stand up to views and authority which try to dictate the way we live our lives.

Governments and organisations are usually hated by 'grunge' listeners as they can sometimes be unethical in the way they use their power. Grunge is like 'Power to the People'.
